All-Natural and Healthy Homemade Popcorn Recipes

Perfect for watching movies, or just on its own, popcorn is a classic snack that’s easy to make at home. If you’re looking for a healthier option or wanting to save some extra bucks, steer clear of microwave popcorn and movie theater popcorn. Not only are they overpriced, but it’s very difficult to find one that has healthy ingredients in it. Making popcorn at home is easier than it seems. Sure, the popping sounds can be intimidating at first, but after your first try, you will start to look forward to that particular sound. Because it only means one thing: it’s popcorn time!

How do you like your popcorn? Plain and salted? Buttery? Cheesy? Caramel? Or do you want something more flavorful like barbecue and sour and cream? It’s so much fun when you have plenty of choices, isn’t it? Bearing this in mind, we decided to come up with flavored popcorn ideas because sometimes we all crave for something new. These recipes are all healthy and all-natural alternatives to your typical store-bought popcorn.

Before anything else, let us teach you the basics of cooking homemade popcorn.

HOW TO MAKE POPCORN

You can use any cooking oil, but we will go with extra virgin olive oil to make it extra healthy.

You only need two ingredients: extra virgin olive oil and 1/4 cup of corn kernels

  1. First, turn on the stove to medium heat.
  2. Then pour oil into the cooking pot. Cover the entire surface with oil.
  3. Check if the heat is sufficient. Drop two to three pieces of corn kernels into the cooking pot. If they pop, it’s ready.
  4. Add the rest of the corn kernels and evenly spread them out.
  5. Cover the pot, but allow a slight opening to let the steam out. This prevents the popcorn from getting soggy.
  6. Wait for the popping sounds. When it begins, wait again until the popping becomes few and far between.
  7. Turn off the heat and remove pot from the stove.

Your popcorn is done cooking and it’s time to play with flavors.

CURRY POPCORN

Spicy. Aromatic. Crunchy. This curry popcorn recipe is all that. We did not shy away from spices because we want it to be legitimately curry.

SEAWEED POPCORN

Among all the recipes, this is the easiest to make. However, we need one main ingredient that is not widely available in regular supermarkets: aonori. Aonori is simply dried seaweed flakes commonly used in East Asian dishes. You will need to buy this from an Asian grocery store near you or online.

SPICY HONEY GARLIC POPCORN

This is the greatest surprise out of all the four flavors we’ve come up with. At first, we weren’t so sure if this would work because it’s a straight up experiment. But we wanted something sweet, garlicky, and spicy all at the same time. Imagine how relieved we were when it came out great! This is our personal favorite.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup corn kernels
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp Tabasco sauce
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt

Note: If you want more spice, add more Tabasco sauce according to taste. Why not chili powder? Tabasco sauce has more kick, plus we mainly used chili powder for coloring.

HONEY CINNAMON POPCORN

Of course, we can’t forget those who have a sweet tooth. Since we’re trying to be healthy here, we made use of honey as the main sweetener. Just like the seaweed popcorn recipe, this is so easy to make. You will also experience less guilt eating this.
